MSA Holds National Committee Meeting in Lagos: Assessing Two Years of Tinubu’s Regime and the Global Capitalist Crisis
The Movement for a Socialist Alternative (MSA)—an affiliate of the International Socialist Alternative (ISA)—held its National Committee (NC) meeting on Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27, 2025, in Lagos. The meeting took place in a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere, with over 44 participants attending in person and 10 joining virtually from across Nigeria. Additionally, representatives from our sister organizations in South Africa and Sweden, along with contacts from Ghana and Uganda, participated via Zoom, reinforcing international solidarity in the fight against capitalist oppression.

The first day of the NC featured an open symposium centred on the theme: “Two Years of Tinubu’s Regime: Renewed Hope or Deepened Hardship?” Comrade Aj. Dagga Tolar, General Secretary of the MSA, delivered the lead presentation, offering a sharp analysis of how the neoliberal policies of the Tinubu regime have only intensified hardship for the Nigerian masses. The so-called “Renewed Hope” agenda has failed to provide any meaningful relief, instead deepening economic misery through: Fuel subsidy removal and skyrocketing fuel prices, Naira devaluation, leading to high inflation, Electricity tariff hikes, Education fee increases, making higher education inaccessible to working-class students.
Comrade Dagga Tolar underscored how capitalism’s global crisis is playing out in Nigeria, pushing more people below the poverty line. Participants—including workers, students, and community activists—contributed to the discussion, emphasizing the urgent need to build a mass revolutionary movement to challenge Tinubu’s policies and the capitalist system itself.
The discussion then shifted to the world economic and political situation, with Comrade Per Ake from the International Secretariat leading the session and Comrade Daniel giving the sum up. He examined: The deepening crisis of global capitalism, the impact of Trump’s tariff regime and rising trade wars, and the looming threat of another global economic recession.

Comrade Per Ake stressed that the crisis of capitalism is international, making the fight for socialism a global necessity. The sum up by Daniel reinforced the importance of international solidarity in resisting capitalist exploitation and building socialist alternatives worldwide.
The second day of the meeting focused on strengthening the MSA and expanding its reach with recommendations to expand interventions in workers’ and students’ struggles, strengthen branch structures and political education, and increase circulation of the Solidarity newspaper.
As part of efforts to strengthen the organisation’s capacity to intervene in ongoing struggles, a struggle fund was organised, raising an impressive ₦135,500. Additionally, 21 copies of the May edition of the Solidarity newspaper were sold, generating ₦4,200. These contributions reflect the continued dedication of comrades to building a fighting organisation capable of challenging capitalist oppression.

With capitalism in crisis and the Tinubu regime failing the Nigerian people, only a socialist alternative can provide a way forward. The MSA remains committed to organizing, educating, and mobilizing the working masses to challenge the system and fight for a socialist transformation of society.
